Hooray For Ignorance

Hooray For Ignorance
In the land outside the city,
The jobs are gone; hope is gone
With bitterness and jealousy
They contemplate where to put the blame
You can almost hear the bumper stickers scream
Hooray for ignorance
Three cheers for baseless certainty
Down with reason; down with empathy
Down with people who don’t look like me
On the cable TV,
They scream and shout their propaganda out
It’s your religious duty to say
“Forget the poor. The rich need more.”
The billionaires are laughing as they say
Hooray for ignorance
Three cheers for the new plutocracy
Down with science; down with history
Down with eggheads who don’t think like me
Now an orange chimpanzee
Tells us all to hate to make our country great
With unfettered cruelty, bigotry and misogyny
Watch the angry voters rise and say
Hooray for ignorance
Three cheers for the kakistocracy
Down with fairness and equality
Down with people who don’t talk like me

Punch Some Nazis

Punch Some Nazis
We’re gonna’ punch some Nazis
If you think that you’re the master race
Let me introduce my fist to your face
If your thoughts are warm toward genocide
You’re gonna’ get a boot up your backside
You say all lives matter unless they’re black
You’re just begging me to kick your ass
If you want to march beneath the swastika
Someone needs to crack your skull
Some prefer non-violence; normally I’d agree
But fascists need some consequence
Like they saw at Cable Street
If you want people thrown in ovens,
You lose your right to calm discussion
We’re gonna’ punch some Nazis

Blood Money

Blood Money
In a world awash with weapons,
Every threat looks like a target
Calling out for a show of masculinity
The friendless aim their sights
At the weak and the powerless
Spreading semi-automatic bursts of tragedy
An unregulated militia,
Being necessary to security of profits,
The flow of blood money shall not be infringed
The futures of our children
Are shockingly discounted
Worth less than one more dirty check or two
They’ll send their thoughts and prayers
And meaningless condolence
While pretending there’s nothing they can do

Burn It Down

Burn It Down
The original sin of our country
Buying slaves in the 16th century
Exterminate the red man
Buy and sell the black man
Keep your knee on his neck
So he can never be free
I don’t know why they don’t
Burn the whole thing down
The shining star on the slave patrol is
Just like the one on today’s uniform
Put down rebellion; stomp out resistance
Protect the power of the status quo
No need for a hood, just get a badge and a gun
You can still lynch a man like they’ve always done
Stand behind the thin blue line
Rest assured that justice will not ever come
No more water; fire next time
Burn the whole thing down

Love Is Love

Love Is Love
Happiness is so elusive
Real connection hard to find
Life’s too short for bigotry
Sanctimony is a waste of precious time
Love is love
The depth of human caring
Is the greatest joy in life
No moldy book or holy relic
Can ever claim to be more divine
